18018 or BOB is a high concept, low budget series in the tradition of my favorite 70s/80s sci-fi films
Visual and Stylistic Influences from Film:
John Carpenter's 'They Live', John Sayles'
'Brother From Another Planet', Repo Man by Alex Cox, 'Gloria' by Jon Cassavetes
'I Don't Feel At Home In This World' by Macon Blair
From TV:
'Sense 8' and 'Work In Progress' by the Wachowskis, 'Devs' by Alex Garland
30 MINUTE, 8 EPISODE, SINGLE CAMERA.
2-3 SEASONS
LOCATION: NYC and the Tri-State Area
18018 or ‘BOB’--an undercover extraterrestrial soldier (and Brooklyn's Best Dog Walker)--faces a harrowing decision when ordered to radically change their mission. Even if it means shattering their perfect little queer human life, it MUST be done to prevent interstellar war from coming to Earth. At least that's what BOB's been led to believe…
CONCEPT
What if an alien soldier of a centuries long intergalactic war, undercover on Earth, found an unexpected love for humanity upon embracing the queerness of their human vessel? And what if, just when they’ve settled into a comfortable, queer relationship (and are thriving as Brooklyn’s Best Dog Walker), they’re suddenly called back to be a soldier for their cause? And what if the side they fight for would do anything to eliminate their enemy’s expansion in the galaxy, even if Earth must be destroyed to do so? Would this soldier stick to their mission, or go AWOL?
Ultimately, this is a sorta spy thriller, with elements of 70s crime dramas, and grounded, low budget 70s Scifi that I love. Specifically: Repo Man, Gloria by John Cassavettes, Brother From Another Planet by John Sayles, and John Carpenter’s ‘They Live’. But with the queered perspective and style of Jon Cameron Mitchell, John Waters, The Wachowskis, and Joey Soloway.
*Much of which we don’t see, as the majority of the story is Earth bound.
The Inner Alliance of Planets–A long established Federation of advanced civilizations that have a hold on the Milky Way Galaxy.
The Outer Alliance of Planets–A newly formed federation of planets, further out in the galaxy, and beyond, not much further along (in Space Time) to Earth.
The War–The Outer Alliance used the Inner Alliance as a model, but their wish for centuries has been to be able to unify and develop on their own terms–in the hopes of establishing an accord with the Inner Alliance upon doing so. The Inner Alliance, however, wants the planets of the Outer Alliance to develop on their terms, and under their long established ordinances–not for them to develop sovereignty as a separate Alliance. The most major point of contention: Reptiles, a nomadic species. The Outer Alliance supports their existence in the universe, and have always seen Earth–yet a part of any alliance–as a potential safe, neutral ground that could be a unifying point for all parties. But the Inner Alliance think Reptiles are parasitic–a ___ weed that must be uprooted and discarded before bringing ruin to the planets they assimilate into.
For the Earth equivalent of two centuries, this war has been fought much like a Cold War. The Inner Alliance is against war on any planet of their own, and the planets of the Outer Alliance are much too far to take it to them. This has meant a great deal of espionage, assassinations, and battles outsourced to various moons. Also–interstellar war is hard. Even for an advanced species. Space is literally designed to kill living creatures, it still takes forever to travel long distances, even with warp drive, and physics don’t allow for the kind of space wars humans like to depict in films.
30s. Non-Binary/Trans. They/Them. Think Emilio Estevez’s punk character in Repo Man mixed with the good hearted, delightful oddness of Joe Morton’s alien in 'Brother From Another Planet'
BOB couldn’t be happier. After a century of not getting the whole human thing right nor fully acclimating to the whole time thing, they now have a thriving little dog walker business in Brooklyn, a sweet dog of their own, and the badass cutie they’ve been seeing for the past year has opened their mind and heart (and sexual chakras) to what being human can be. And for the first time in over a century, BOB has almost forgotten that they are an undercover soldier for the Inner Alliance of Planets, which have been embroiled in a long war with The Outer Alliance of Planets, and the nomadic Reptiles. BOB is on Earth to spy on the assimilation of Reptiles into the human milieu but would do anything to be able to live out their current human vessel’s life without hearing from their superiors, and for none of their beloveds to ever know the truth. But all that’s about to change when an unexpected recon check becomes a new, fucked up mission…
30s. Transfemme. Think the badassery of Cher Strauberry (pro-skating’s first Trans skater) mixed with the wit and fierceness of Kerri Colby.
LYNNE is a harcore goth punk badass and IT wizard who makes good money solving tech issues for spoiled, wealthy corporate bros. She doesn’t go anywhere without her skateboard, and can ride a halfpipe like she was born on one. LYNNE loves her people and community deeply, and will cut a bitch for them if need be. She loves queer make out parties, going to hardcore concerts, and hanging out with BOB–who she thinks is such a sweet weirdo cutie and unlike anyone she’s ever met. And though she always will be poly, non-monogamous, non-hierarchical non-normative queer through and through–LYNNE is definitely down for BOB being something more than a friend and lover. BUt if there’s one thing LYNNE can’t rock with, it’s being lied to. And LYNNE is about to be pulled into a harrowing situation with world changing consequences, due to a lie that she might never forgive.
40s/50s. Cis Male. Think Henry Rollins in ‘He Never Dies’ meets the thick headedness of Roddy Piper’s Dude in ‘They Live’.
ARGEAUX used to be a big deal. A bigger deal than BOB, that’s for sure. A star recruit for the Inner Alliance of Planets with endless potential. But it turned out that there was a stark difference between running simulated missions in boot camp versus real ones, and ARGEAUX soon proved himself a consistent fuck up–making bold, bullheaded decisions in moments of panic that cost lives. ARGEAUX quickly fell down the ladder as his boot camp peers ascended, and for a century he’s been nothing more than a glorified messenger and chauffeur for undercover agents in the field. ARGEAUX is chomping at the bit to prove himself a worthy soldier again, and would do anything to see BOB fuck everything up. And he might just get his chance…
30s. Cis Male. Italian-American (speaks Italian). Think an Italian, Jersey, Yogi Berra type played by someone like Danny Franzese.
PINO loves tattoos, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and cheese. Like any kinda cheese. He’d die happy if his days involved nothing else. His aunt who owns the deli he works in appreciates his passion, but wishes he weren’t so fucking annoying. Too bad he’s actually the leader of the Reptilian insurgency, and is about to be summoned back to his post to lead the next wave of their expansion. Oh yeah, and he got a nice lady he met in his church group pregnant, and that’s news that will have major implications on all fronts of this centuries long war.
30s/40s. Any gender. Think Anthony Kiedis and Flea in The Chase mixed with John Sayles and David Straithairn’s alien bounty hunters in Brother From Another Planet.
BLOTH & CREETH are loyal soldiers of the reptile volunteer army. They are ready to do whatever necessary take the next steps in securing their kind’s place on Earth, and to prove that Reptiles are more than just parasites, as so deemed by the Inner Alliance. And they have arrived to re-activate their leader, who is currently disguised as a Cheesemonger in an Italian Deli in Jersey. But when they find him violently liquified in the deli bathroom–nothing will stop Bloth and Creeth from seeking vengeance,
Ageless. Genderless. A disembodied alien voice that speaks for a collective consciousness of advanced beings that rule the Inner Alliance. It manifests in various forms, as communication across space is complicated and takes time, even for advanced civilizations.
60s. Cis Femme. Italian. Speaks Italian--English second language.
Co-Owner of Gianni Giusto's Salumeria con Gusto in Fairfield New Jersey. Perpetually annoyed by her nephew Pino, who she's had to look after since her estranged sister left him on her doorstep.(at the age of 16). But even if she can't stand you, and even if she doesn't know you're actually a Reptilian sleeper agent, don't underestimate the power of an Italian auntie's love--and the retribution she will seek if you fuck with her family.
